Improving library facilities

All children love stories, and reading books can help rural kids to see the world beyond their native village. One of the best forms of educational assistance can be improving library facilities at a school.

In 2009, Born Free provided Rathambalagama School with desks and chairs for their library. Born Free Sri Lanka supporters, Varuni Samanthi (Sri Lanka) and Jo White (England) donated books worth nearly 85,000LKR (£450) in 2010.

We were also made aware that, although these valuable resources were available,  children had limited access to the library during the school hours due to lack of assigned staff for the library. Madhava and Jithari Atapattu (Sri Lanka) agreed to pay for a library assistant for the year 2011.

Thanks to Born Free Sri Lanka supporters, students of the Rathambalagama School now have the access to literature from around the world and to extra reading materials including subjects such as nature and conservation. They enjoy the lending facility a lot!

Meanwhile, with her friends in the USA, Kamali Perera (Sri Lanka) is arranging to send a collection of new and used English books across to the kids in Rathamabalagama.
