Dolo was initially rescued in 2007 having been kept for four years on a 1m long chain for 24 hours a day. With the help of the Cullum family, Einat Danieli and other Born Free supporters, EWCA and Born Free moved Dolo to a temporary home at the headquarters of Awash National Park while work on securing and developing the Rescue Centre continued.

He was then eventually moved to Ensessa Kotteh where he now enjoys a spacious, natural enclosure which offers peace and quiet and many shady spots under the beautiful acacia trees.

Born Free Ethiopia subsequently rescued a young lioness called Safia who now shares Dolo’s enclosure; providing company for both lions.

With the help of your donations, Dolo and Safia’s enclosure is now completely enlarged. Safia was quick to become accustomed to the new perimeter and, finding her old favourite spot, reclaimed it with much face rubbing and scratching. But mostly blind Dolo was a bit disoriented at first, staying in the smaller outdoor area before venturing out to the newer space. It took him three days to explore the entire enclosure. But unlike Safia, Dolo has found a few new napping spots he seems to prefer. The cooler season suits him and he has become more active, the annual rains renewing vegetation and breathing new life into the centre.
