This month was not too busy, with six schools visiting us.

Some of the groups saw all our cats in the sanctuary, some saw a few and some did not see any. We explain that our lions and leopards are free to choose whether or not they let themselves be seen.  On the game drive everyone got to see a lot of animals.

We had one of the Grahamstown’s well known private schools, Kingswood, to visit. The school is a member of the Independent Schools Association of South Africa. It is attended by boarding and day scholars. Because the school was so happy with their visit they even gave a donation to Born Free. They were one of the groups that saw most of our cats.

We also had a new school from Despatch in the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality. They visited us for the first time. They enjoyed it and they booked another visit next month. They were so well behaved and keen to learn. They got to see lots of animals on game drive and they saw all our cats on the sanctuary tour.

One of our schools that we support, Sandisulwazi High School from Paterson, caught fire about two weeks ago. Sadly, because of the scarcity of water in the area, they lost three classes from the fire. The neighbouring businesses helped them a lot as they closed the businesses and sent the staff to help kill the fire. They used all the fire extinguishers they had in controlling the fire. The Disaster Management from the local municipality is also doing their best to give help to the school.

Luckily there were no casualties and the fire was eventually stopped and only three classes got burnt.  However, all the furniture and books inside the classes were destroyed.  It is said that the Department of Education will fix the burnt roof and widows and the local municipality will give some furniture for the school.
