Born Free Foundation - Keep Wildlife in the Wild

Born Free / Shamwari Education Blog Sep09

The first week in September every year South Africa celebrates National ArbourWeek. During this week everyone throughout the country plants trees. We planted indigenous trees at all the schools and I did a little talk with the children as to why trees are important and how to care for them.

We had a Born Free Holiday group come this month and we took them to visit one of the schools as two of the guests had bought with a whole lot of goodies. We decided to take them to Hendrik Kanise in Alicedale and the principal gave them a tour of the school. The school was very happy for the donation and I really enjoyed showing off the school that I am so proud of. (This is the school

On Friday 18 September 2009 Sandisulwazi High School and Kayakhulu Primary School in Paterson and Born Free joined forces to clean up the town. The local municipality, local businesses, Shamwari Game Reserve and Amakhala Game Reserve came to help out as well. Close to 400 learners were present and split into groups of 10 with an adult. A competition was held to see which group could collect the most rubbish. Approximately 1000 bags of rubbish was collected and over 800kg of glass was recycled. This was probably the highlight of my year as I was so impressed with what these schools achieved and as this was all their own idea it just shows that our hard work is paying off.

I have been going through the Eco-school files to get them ready for submission and I was pleasantly surprised with a bunch of letters from Sandisulwazi High School’s Eco-Club.
