Bella Recovers from Infection

Bella the lioness, a resident at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi, has not been too well of late.

She gave the LWC team a big scare one morning just before Christmas when they found her pacing up and down and panting, obviously in discomfort.  She is getting quite old, so the decision to knock her down is one not taken lightly.  However as she was clearly in discomfort, we really needed to find out what was wrong.

Luckily the test results came back to show that it was a bladder infection which was cleared up with antibiotics.  We were worried about her kidneys since this can often be a problem in old age but her tests fortunately indicate that all is well in that area.  She does however have a chronic anaemia which we need to treat.  We’re pretty sure it’s not a dietary issue since she is so spoilt and gets better steak than we do. We will need to keep an eye on this and try and work out the cause.

We are lucky to have some great vets helping us out and we’d like to send special thanks to Dr Sophie Widdowson  who is the Vet Manager for the Lilongwe Society for the Protection and Care for Animals and to John Knight, Born Free’s Senior Veterinary Consultant.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress.  Here are some photos of her latest health check up… and if  you would like to see the vital rescue and care work of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in action, then visit www.lilongwewildllife.org for information on volunteering.
