Since 2002, Born Free has had a sanctuary for rescued tigers in Bannerghatta National Park in Southern India.
The enclosures or 'kraals' offer each tiger a hectare of natural forest habitat and access to water, in which they typically love to relax. At Bannerghatta, Born Free’s rescued tigers are given space, peace and privacy in a section of the park which is closed to visitors.
Tragically, the conditions and events they have suffered pre-rescue have left them unsuitable for release into the wild, but at Bannerghatta they receive the care and respect they deserve.
Three of the tigers currently cared for at Bannerghatta were moved there in 2002, having been rescued from circuses and the pet trade in Europe. In 2008, a wild-born tiger that had been caught and mutilated in a poacher’s trap not far from Banerghatta also arrived at the sanctuary.
