The Painted Dog Conservation Project works to protect the painted dog and increase its range and numbers both in Zimbabwe and elsewhere in Africa, through conservation, education and community involvement.

Supported by Born Free, based on the fringe of Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe, the initial emphasis was to identify critical issues and develop a strategy to make a substantial, lasting contribution to painted dogs, nature conservation and the lives of the local people.  A multi-faceted programme now employs over 50 local people, undertaking research and direct action policies such as the rehabilitation of injured or orphaned painted dogs and anti poaching patrols, backed up by an extensive conservation education programme.
