Behind the bars: cheetahs in captivity

Cheetahs in Houston Zoo © BFF

Throughout the world, thousands of cheetahs and countless lions, tigers and leopards are kept in often appalling conditions in zoos as well as circuses and private hands.  Even in ‘better’ zoos, cheetahs often pace abnormally back and forth, frustrated because their hunting and ranging instincts are denied.  They are exceptionally sensitive to stress, vulnerable to infectious disease and can suffer dietary problems in captivity.  Cheetahs do not breed well in zoos, plus it is extremely difficult to return any captive-bred cat to the wild as they do not have the skills needed to survive.
