The IUCN* Red List, which lists all threatened species of animals, classes the Northwest African subspecies of cheetah as Critically Endangered**, the rest of the African population as Vulnerable3 and the Asiatic subspecies as Critically Endangered***. 

Approximately 12,500 African cheetahs are thought to remain in the wild in around 25 African countries.  Less than 100 Asiatic cheetahs are thought to remain scattered in Iran.
