Behind the bars: Brown bears

Bears are inquisitive and opportunistic and can suffer particularly badly in captivity.  Bears in zoos and circuses can display many abnormal behaviours, such as bar-biting, swaying from side to side, or even self-mutilation, while dancing bears are forced to perform.  Born Free campaigns to end the confinement and exploitation of bears and all wild animals for ‘entertainment’.

In collaboration with German NGO, animal public, Born Free is campaigning to rehome two brown bears in a pit in Berlin to a sanctuary.  For more information on the Berlin bear campaign, please click here.
