With Born Free’s support, the West Kilimanjaro Conservation Project has recruited four more Maasai fieldmen to expand the range and frequency of wildlife patrols in the foothills of Africa’s mightiest mountain. Without proper equipment, the efficacy of such patrols would be limited, but thanks to Born Free and the Humane Society International (HSI) – Australia, these fieldmen and their 12 colleagues all now boast new boots and binoculars. This equipment will prove invaluable in helping them monitor not only wildlife numbers and distribution in the area, but also human activity to better understand the threats faced by the gradually recovering wildlife populations.
