Gala Auction, Norwich - Tuesday 23rd September 2008

The herd of life-size baby elephants like Meiluami are currently on safari in locations across Norwich city until 31 August 2008!!  The 53 elephants have been beautifully decorated by an artist or community group (including Meiluami, decorated by schoolchildren in Kenya the story of which can be viewed here!).

The elephants, including Meiluami, will be sent to savannahs new on September 23rd 2008 when they are sold in aid of Born Free Foundation and Clic Sargent at a gala auction in Norwich!  Attendees to the charity auction in September will include Born Free’s founder, Virginia McKenna OBE and elephant expert Winnie Kiiru.  Tickets are now available exclusively to Born Free supporters so get yours now before they sell out!! (contact details below)

Taking place in The Forum, this special evening event will see many of the beautiful and uniquely adorned sculptures amassed in one herd, to create a truly spectacular site.

Guests will be invited to wander through the herd, browsing the beasts from tusk to tail and deciding which work of art will adorn their office, home or garden. Champagne and canapés will be served with bidders seated comfortably while TW Gaze Auctioneers lead the proceedings.

The elephants will be fully restored after their ten weeks on the streets so that they are in pristine condition to be sold. The plinths they stand on and their plaques will be removed before auction.

Attend the auction and bid for an elephant!

Keep your eyes peeled for some dramatic painted elephants popping up around Norwich.  The elephants are created by ‘Wild in Art’, who brought painted cows to many towns.  The elephant sculptures form a plain ‘canvas’ which are sponsored and turned into a work of art and then sold at charity auctions.

The first herd of elephants will be seen gathering in Norwich between June 23rd - August 31st.  They are then to be spruced up and auctioned off in Norwich in aid of Born Free and Clic Sargent on 23rd September 2008.
